Murphy, Barbara WESTERLY, R.I. Barbara Murphy, 62, passed away on November 30, 2014 in Westerly. She was born on March 17, 1952 in St. Louis, Mo. to Dorothy Shapleigh and Dr. John Shapleigh. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Arthur Murphy of Westerly; her children, Leigh Murphy and Jake Murphy, both of New York City; her sisters, Katharine Kolowich of Concord, Mass. and Louise Shapleigh of Ballwin, Mo.; her brother John Shapleigh and his wife Anne of St. Louis, Mo.; her stepmother, Mrs. John B. (Kimmy) Shapleigh, and stepsisters, Melissa Hummel of St. Louis and Holly Eggert of Boulder, Colo.; as well as 22 nieces and nephews. Barbara grew up in Ladue, Mo. and graduated from John Burrough's School in 1970. She graduated from Smith College in 1974. She worked on the staff and eventually served as the executive director of The Girls Club of New York from 1976-1980. She received an MBA from Columbia University in 1982. Her career in finance started at Blyth Eastman Paine Webber in New York City and continued in Albany at the New York State Science and Technology Foundation, and finally at Norstar Venture Capital in Albany, where she was a partner. Barbara was active in many community service organizations in Albany. She served as president of the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. She also served on the board of the New York State Communities Aid Association, advocating policies concerning child welfare, infant health and early childhood learning. After moving to Bronxville in 1996, she served as a board member of the Greyston Foundation in Yonkers, which provides job training, low-income housing, HIV healthcare, and childcare to an underserved community. In addition she served on the boards of Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe, and the Concordia College Conservatory of Music and Art in Bronxville. Barbara impacted the lives of many family members, friends and business associates. However, her greatest joy was her children, her face lit up in a way unlike any other in their presence. She brought great intellect and energy to her many endeavors, it was so important for her to reach out to those less fortunate in our community. Barbara did this with a special grace and kindness that preserved the dignity of all those she served. In this way she provided a lesson for us all. There will be visitation at the Buckler-Johnson Funeral Home in Westerly on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. and a funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church in Stonington, Conn. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Barbara was committed to many charitable organizations big and small, but the one closest to her heart was the Greyston Foundation. Donations in Barbara's name can be sent to the Greyston Foundation in Yonkers (greyston.com) or Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island (hhcri.net).
