Barbara Morris Frissell PORTLAND -- Barbara Morris Frissell passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, June 11, 2007 ,after a long and adventurous life. Born Jan. 29, 1911 in Washington, D.C., to Matthew Elting Hanna and Helen Dodd Richards Hanna, hers was a life of privilege and travel during her childhood. She lived with her parents for a time in Berlin, Germany where her foreign service father was Military Liason Officer. Some years later, when her mother remarried, her stepfather, Admiral Charles Morris, adopted her. Due to his position as Paymaster General of the Navy, Barbara and her parents were occasionally guests at the White House. She attended the University of Vermont after graduating from Gunston Hall School. Her travels continued after her marriage to a West Point graduate, Lt. Thomas Flynn. First was Staten Island, N.Y., where her oldest son, Thomas DeNyse, was born. The family was then sent to Panama, where Helen Enid and Matthew Edward were born. They eventually settled in East Barrington, N.H., where they owned and operated Four Gates Dairy Farm. Life moved on and there was another marriage and three more children, Johanna Marcia, John Mark, and Sydney Dodd. Barbara's life was indeed a long road of many hills and dales, but it was never dull. Later, Barbara and her husband, Sydney Dodd Frissell, moved to South Berwick to a lovely historic center-chimney colonial that Barbara, with her interior decorating talents and passion for antiques, totally restored. She was active in local garden clubs and often opened her gracious home to history lovers. After Mr. Frissell's death, Barbara moved to Freeport to be nearer her youngest daughter, Johanna. There she lived very happily for many years in her charming little home surrounded by the fabulous gardens she created. As her health slowly declined, Barbara lived for a time at BaySquare in Yarmouth, and then finally at FallBrook Woods in Portland. She is survived by all her loving children, Thomas DeNyse Flynn and his wife Bette of Port Charlotte, Fla., Helen Enid Flynn Aldrich and her husband James of Midland, Va., Matthew Edward Smith of Newport-Richey, Fla., Johanna Frissell Butts and her husband Charles of Brunswick, John Mark Frissell and his wife Elaine of Dracut, Mass., and Sydney Dodd Frissell Jr. of Deep Gap, N.C. She is predeceased by her brother, Judge Matthew E. Hanna of Darien, Conn. Barbara was a fascinating, intellectual, many faceted woman ahead of her time. A gifted conversationalist with an insatiable curiosity about all things, an avid reader and lover of classical music, she left a lasting impression on all who met her. She has left her children, 17 loving grandchildren and several great- grandchildren with many incredible memories. She will be deeply missed, but she is at peace and enjoying finally what she always referred to as The Last and Greatest Adventure. On July 10, 2007, she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Pater in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Barbara Morris Frissell
