CHELSEA -- Barbara Louise (Blodgett) Alexander, 78, was surrounded by her family on the evening of March 29, 2011, when she peacefully went to be with her Lord.She was born May 17, 1932, at her family home on the Blodgett Road in Pittston. She was the daughter of H. Ellsworth and Mildred Blodgett. After graduating from Bridge Academy in 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Leonard F. Alexander Jr., on Oct. 27, 1951. She worked at Gardiner Shoe Factory and the Augusta Mental Health Institute. After raising her family, she returned to work and retired from MaineGeneral Medical Center in 1997.Barb loved spending time with her family. Her favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, antique car meets, and Maple Syrup Sunday. Barb especially got great enjoyment mowing her lawn and tending to her flowers.She was a member of the Chelsea Grange for 50 years. She had completed all degrees of the Grange, including the National Grange. She was also a member of the Pittston Historical Society, Maine Obsolete Automobile League, and St. Matthias' Church in Richmond. Barb was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Doris Alexander, and her brothers, George and Clifton Blodgett.She is survived by her husband of 59 years; her son, Leonard G. Alexander, of Chelsea; her daughter, Betty L. and husband Daniel Bailey of Farmingdale; son Edward I. and wife Catherine F. Alexander of Whitefield; grandson Douglas D. Bailey of Pittston; granddaughter Dr. Susan L. Bailey of Pittston; grandson Thomas E. Alexander of Whitefield; and granddaughter Lauren E. Alexander of Whitefield; her sister, Marie Bronn, of Chelsea; half brother Herbert E. and wife Maureen Blodgett of Randolph; half sister Debbie Blodgett of Connecticut; brother-in-law Phillip L. Alexander Sr. of Chelsea; brother-in-law Alan and wife Edith Alexander of Monmouth; brother-in-law the Rev. Bruce Sr. and wife Marjorie Alexander of Dresden; sister-in-law Deidre Blodgett of Dresden; sister-in-law Norma "Tootie" Blodgett of Pittston; several nieces, nephews and friends.A loving thank-you to niece Marion M. Alexander, niece Nettie-Mae Alexander, and nephew Phillip L. Alexander Jr., all of Chelsea. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011, at First Baptist Church, 47 Church St., Gardiner. Spring burial will occur at Oak Grove Cemetery.Barb's courageous battle with cancer has been an example for all of us. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made in Barbara's memory to the Alfond Center for Cancer Care, Office of Philanthropy, 361 Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, ME 04330.
