POULTNEY - Barbara K. Hill passed away on October 18th, 2010, after a brief illness. Barbara lived most of her life in Sunderland and Arlington, moving to Poultney only six years ago. Born on June 22, 1921, she was the daughter of Walter M. and Amy Grout Keough. She attended grade school in Sunderland and Arlington High School. Barbara married the late Howard Hill on June 22, 1940. Although she was always interested in politics and local affairs, her love of family and friends came first. Nothing pleased her more than entertaining friends and family with good food and a great time. In 1959, Barbara and Howard took over Hill's Farm Inn in Sunderland when Howard's parents retired. They owned and operated the inn until their retirement in 1983. Barbara's experience in cooking for large groups turned out to be an asset as she was now doing it for a livelihood. In her younger years, Barbara was active in Home Dem, forming a club in Sunderland which became very active and grew in size to include other clubs. She later served as the president of the Bennington County Council of Extension clubs. She was very involved in Grange, serving for many years on the Mount Equinox Grange Ways and Means Committee. She was instrumental in forming a Juvenile Grange in Manchester. Barbara was a lifelong member of the Red Mountain Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, serving two terms as matron. Barbara was a member of the First Congregational Church in Manchester, Sunderland Union Church and the Federated Church of East Arlington, where she served on the altars and missions committees and the board of trustees. Barbara was active in the Federated Church Enterprise Society. She served as president of Church Women United, and was active on the Women's Fellowship of the Vermont UCC. One could always find her in the kitchen helping with dinners for the Grange and her church. Barbara was a member of the Arlington Garden Club and the Manchester Historical Society. Barbara loved playing bridge and was very knowledgeable in the bridge conventions. She is survived by her son, John Hill, his wife Kate and granddaughter Meghan, who reside in Benson; a brother, Stuart Keough residing in Largo, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, in 1988; a son, Richard, in 1963; a son, Jerry, in 2005; and a brother, Austin, in 1971. A reception for friends and family to share memories will be held on Saturday, October 23, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Baptist Church of Poultney in East Poultney. Interment will take place in Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester on Saturday, October 30th, at 12 p.m., followed by a memorial service at the Federated Church in East Arlington at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.View the guest book at www.rutlandherald.com/ obits.
