DAVIS, Calif. - Barbara Jean Nath Brown, died at home Thursday, September 1, 2011 after a brave battle with brain cancer.Barbara was born November 18, 1916, in North Chelmsford, Mass. to Ella (McCoy) and Simon Nath. She graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1934 and from the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. From earliest childhood she spent summers in Campton where her maternal grandparents lived. She fondly remembered village life - the gang of kids, mountain hikes, sleeping on balsam boughs under the stars on top of Mount Osceola. In Campton she met her future husband, Chester, from Connecticut, another lover of New Hampshire. They married in 1939, settling into prep school life at Kent School in Connecticut, later at Williston Academy in Massachusetts, and finally at Tilton School in New Hampshire, each move closer to the place of their beloved summers. In 1949 they purchased a piece of land along Mad River in Thornton where they built a house Barbara designed and on which they worked many summers.Barbara's passions were many: wide and voracious reading, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, sewing, playing the piano (an especially mean ragtime!), working as a home nutritional aide for the State of New Hampshire, for land conservation and the Peace Movement. For years she stood weekly with her "group" on the Plymouth Common. She attended the Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Plymouth. She protested the Vietnam War, rode a bus to Washington D.C. with her peace group where she held a lit candle and recited the name of a fallen New Hampshire soldier in a night ceremony on The National Mall. She was a fabulous cook, living frugally but fruitfully on the "Waste not, want not" philosophy. In 1987 she relocated to Davis, Calif., for the winters, returning to New Hampshire every summer. Wherever she was, she embraced life. She participated in several Elderhostels and did tutoring in ESL. Almost up to the end, she was an active member of two reading groups, a music group, volunteered playing the piano weekly at a local nursing home and an assisted living facility, and joined a memoir writing group. She also loved her daily JUMBLES!Her husband predeceased her in 1976 and her son, Jonathan, in 2003.She leaves behind two sisters, Elizabeth Marshall of York, Pa., Virginia Natwick of San Diego Calif., three daughters, Stephanie Brown-Fehm, Katharine Brown both of Davis, Calif., Susan Norris and her husband, Tim, of Andover, two grandchildren, Gretchen Blake and her husband, Ian, of Woodland Calif., Matthew Norris and his wife, Tara, of Seattle Wash., four great grandchildren, Anna, Allison, and Elizabeth Blake, Tobin Norris, and many devoted nieces and nephews.Barbara, a woman of substance, inspiration, determination, and kindness - Mum, Grandmum, GG - greatly loved will be hugely missed and long remembered.A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Upper Mad River Cemetery in Thornton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to Yolo Hospice (PO Box 1014, Davis, California, 95617) or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. (SKUUF, 101 Fairground Road, Plymouth, N.H. 03264).
