Barbara Jean Mitchell was born on May 13, 1932, to James and Ida Bowens in Greenville, S.C. She received her formal education at Sterling High School (class of 1951) in Greenville, S.C., and Virginia Union College in Richmond, Va. Barbara Jean was united in holy matrimony on Nov. 28, 1953, to George Leroy Mitchell in Greenville, S.C. To this union three cherished children were born: Terrance Leroy "Terry" of Greenville, Aldin Quinn "Al" of Huntsville, Ala., and Brenda Jenee of Columbia, S.C. Barbara Jean was a dear, devoted, and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She gave her life to God at an early age. Barbara Jean especially enjoyed cooking and family gatherings. She was active with her Sterling High School Class of '51 and the Bowens Family Reunion Committee. She worked with the family business, Smiley and Mitchell Income Tax and Bookkeeping Service, and as an income tax consultant. Barbara Jean departed life on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002. She leaves to cherish a wealth of fond memories her devoted husband, George, sons, Terry and Al, and her beloved daughter, Brenda; two daughters-in-law, Delores Mitchell of Greenville and Janet Mitchell of Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Alma Smiley of Greenville and Emma Ellington of Detroit, Mich.; four cherished and loved grandchildren, Tela, Trent, Chris, and Candice; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary with burial at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. - Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary
