Barbara J. Smith RotterdamBarbara J. (Brassard) Smith, 78, of Rotterdam, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, with her loving family by her side. Born in Schenectady on January 30, 1935, Barbara was the daughter of the late Ernest and Estella (Hammond) Brassard. She was raised and educated in Schenectady and a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Barbara began her employment with Linton High School in the cafeteria. She continued her career in special education as an aide for Draper Jr. High School and Guilderland High School where she worked for 25 years until her retirement. Barbara was a member of the Red Hat Society and was a Girl Scout Leader for several local troops. She enjoyed bowling, camping, traveling and all things casino related. She loved to rollerskate and while doing this, she met her future husband, Warren Smith. Barbara immensely loved her family. She is esteemed as the matriarch of the family and was integral in bringing the family together throughout the year. She was most proud of her beloved grandchildren and their accomplishments. She is dearly remembered for the sparkle in her eye, great big rosy cheeks and her huge smile. In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Warren Smith whom she married in July of 1954; a beloved daughter, Sandra Smith; several siblings, Ernest, Arthur, Richard, Leland, and Donald Brassard and Merk Lewis; and her companion of 20 years, Nick Parascandola. She is survived by her children, Nancy (Gary) Casso of Rotterdam, Garry (Jaqueline) Smith of Elkton, FL, Wendy (Robert) Filler of Punta Gorda, FL, Mark (Lora) Smith of Schenectady and Bryan (Cathleen) Smith of E. Greenbush; her brother, Ralph (Retha) Brassard of Lakeland, FL; 11 grandchildren, Joel and Kayla Servant, Katie and Nick Smith, Amanda and Paul Smith, Corissa and Joe Casso, Jodie Hoy, Stacie Caska and Jamie Allen; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jordan Caska, Adrianna and Nicolas Sage and Olivia, Rayah Grace and Jack; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. at Baxter-Andrew Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady followed by a celebration of Barbara's life at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be on Monday at 9 a.m. at Memory Gardens, Albany.
