ObituaryBarbara Irene Smith, 47, of Ft. Myers, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Hope Hospice House. She was born Sept. 27, 1955, Richmond, VA., the daughter of Alf and Joan Firing Weit. Barbara fought a long, eight year battle with breast cancer. With her determination and spirit, she lived longer than any thought possible. She was a true survivor. She moved to Ft. Myers Beach in 1961 and then to Ft. Myers in 1973. In 1985, she and her husband founded The Southwest Florida Steel Erection Co., which continues to thrive and where she was the vice-president and office manager. She was an active member of IMSA, a member of PEO, the Covenant Presbyterian Church and a devoted supporter of the Republican Party. Barbara is survived by her loving husband David, her mother, Joan Weit; a daughter, Shelsea (James) Ratz; brothers, Mark (Linda) Firing, Marty (Dawn) Weit, Jeff Weit, Ken Weit; 3 grandchildren, Andrew, Sydney and Lauren, all of Ft. Myers, Florida. She is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Memorial services will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at 10:00 AM, at the Convenant Presbyterian Church.
