Barbara I. GrayLowell, MA native, served in Navy WAVES; 91 ASTORIA, New York -- Barbara I. Gray, of Astoria, New York, formerly of Lowell, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2012, in Astoria, aged 91 years.Born in Lowell, March 20, 1921, she was a daughter of the late George and Eva (Hunt) Gray. Barbara graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1939, after which she joined the Navy WAVES, serving as an Aviation Machinist's Mate.Barbara received her training at Hunter College, Bronx, NY, entered into active duty on November 30, 1944, and was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946. During this time, she received a letter of recognition from President Harry S. Truman.After proudly serving the country she loved, Barbara went to work for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, where she remained until her retirement in 1983. Miss Gray was also a recipient of the Monsignor Thomas F. Cribbon Service Award, in appreciation of her tireless volunteer efforts over the years.Barbara will be sadly missed by her family and many friends, especially those who resided at the Catherine Sheridan house in New York, which was her home for many years.Miss Gray is survived by her beloved sisters, Phyllis A. Emerson of Lowell, and Ruth Goelz of Hollywood, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Francis Dupras and Lawrence Gray.GRAY -- In Astoria, NY, June 12, 2012. Barbara I.
