of Leominster, Lunenburg PrimarySchool teacher; loving mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and aunt; 59 LEOMINSTER -- Barbara Hope Nelson, 59, died peacefully in her sleep at The Highlands, after a short illness.Barbara was born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia on July 17, 1951. She was the daughter of Wanda Hope (Webster) Nelson and the late Emerson "Bud" Mason Nelson.Besides her mother, Wanda, she is survived by one daughter, Amber Lee Costa of Tarpon Springs, Florida; and two sons, Anthony Nelson Romano and Daniel Paul Romano, both of Leominster. She is survived by one granddaughter, Ava Marie Maxim, who called her grandmother, "Rhubarb".She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Donald M. Nelson and his wife, Sue, of Lunenburg, Deborah A. Dalacos and her husband, Peter, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, Tina L. Nelson, of Fitchburg, and Michael S. Nelson and his girlfriend, Lisa Nugent, of Leominster.Barbara was absolutely adored by her several nieces and a nephew, Selah Dalacos, Natalie Dalacos, Alexi Dalacos, Kimberly Nelson, Betsy Nelson, D.J. Nelson, Aleah Nelson, Emma Nelson and Bailey Nelson.Barbara worked in the Massachusetts school system for over 30 years, 25 of which she taught the third and first grades in the Lunenburg School System. She worked extremely hard for everything that was important to her. She earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Salem State College. Through her perseverance and hard work, she later went on to earn a Masters of Arts Degree in Education from Lesley College.By earning these degrees, she went on to mold and teach over 500 little minds. She had so many children pass through her door and through her kindness, patience and zest for teaching she has taught each and every child something different. Every year she created very special memories for each child and with the coming and going of each school year, Barbara gained momentum and excitement for the following school year.Barbara was a very passionate person who enjoyed many activities with family and friends. When she wasn't in the classroom you could find her baking, making arts and crafts and collecting one of her favorite items: snowmen. She also enjoyed taking visits to places she loved like Rockport, Maine, Florida, Vermont and Pickety Place in New Hampshire, just to name a few. Her whole life Barbara was an avid tennis player and was very competitive in all games and sports. On a sunny summer day you could find her blueberry picking with her dear friends Mike and Maria Courtemanche. No matter what the activity or time of year, she was funny and upbeat and put a smile on everyone's face who was in her presence. She loved spending time with the people in her life; her students, fellow teachers, friends, and most of all, her family.NELSON -- Funeral Services will be on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, (www.masiarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net), 763 Mass Avenue, Lunenburg, MA 01462. Burial will be announced at the Funeral. Calling Hours will be on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, from 6:00 -- 8:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
