Barbara-Helen Smith, née en 2011, conjointe de Reverend-Gilbert Smith, mère de David, est décédée le 22 octobre 2011.
SMITH, Barbara Helen Born in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1925, passed into the presence of her Lord October 22, 2011. Predeceased by her husband the Reverend Gilbert Smith, sister Mary and brother Hubert. Survived by her son David (Ethelwyn), grandchildren Stephen, Brian (Heidi) and Sarah, brothers Fred, Lloyd (Margaret) and Bill of NZ, as well as many loving nephews and nieces who cherished "Aunty Barb's " visits to NZ. Many friends in Ontario, Victoria, Ireland and NZ will also mourn her passing. As a young girl Barb was a willing and able farming assistant to her older brothers. When farming wasn't encouraged for a young woman in the late 1940s, she studied to be a nutritionist in Dunedin then worked her way around the world. She was proud to claim her attendance at Queen Elizabeth II coronation. Working in Peterborough, Ontario she met and married Reverend Gilbert Smith. Many lifetime friends were made there and in Brantford. The family moved to NZ for two years and then came to Victoria. Barbara supported Gilbert in his ministry at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Barbara's faith and listening ear had an impact on many lives, young and old. She and Gilbert hosted many happy occasions in their homes, both in Ontario and Victoria. She was devoted to the Canadian Girls in Training program. In the early 70s Barb returned to university to upgrade her training so as to finance her vision for a retreat property. Desiring a location to host small groups, she purchased property on Saltspring Island. There, with many helping hands, over several years, she built a cabin where wonderful memories were made. She considered this her most significant achievement, as do her family and friends! Barbara was a generous friend. She supported many causes that ministered to people in need, at home and around the world. She loved sharing the bounty of her garden with friends and shut-ins. We will all miss you, Barb. The family wishes to thank Dr. Donna Cuthbert for her care and compassion for many years and the nursing staff who have cared for her at SPH and RJH. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Victoria Hospice or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2964 Tillicum Rd, Saturday, October 29 at 1:30 p.m. 641041
