->WALDOBORO -- Barbara Grinnell Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 2, 2009, at her home in Waldoboro. She was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Washington, a daughter of Earl and Anna Fisher Grinnell. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1946. She was employed by the Paragon Button Factory, Medomak Canning Factory and, later on, for GTE Sylvania.On Dec. 21, 1947, she married Walter Johnson and they made their home in Waldoboro, where they raised their two children. She continued to work at Sylvania while raising her children and retired from there after 28 years of service.Barbara and Walter went to Crystal Falls dancing and beano on Monday nights. She loved traveling and taking bus tours after her retirement. She also enjoyed trips to Moosehead. She was a wonderful cook who made many pies for vendors to sell at Union Fair. Her strawberry pie was famous everywhere. She also made pies and sandwiches every other Monday, with her buddy, Arlene, for beano, where they would work in the concessions selling hot dogs. She spent many hours traveling to watch her grandchildren play basketball and softball. She was an avid Red Sox fan. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens. Mostly, Barbara enjoyed the time she spent with her family and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.She was a member and president of the Soule-Shuman Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 4525 in Waldoboro. Her leadership led the group to many areas. Every fall, she spent hours buying articles for the auxiliary to hold an auction at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta for a Christmas shopping day for the residents. They were given paper money and the event was memorable. She attended District 7 meetings and was a leader in all local events. Representing the Post and auxiliary, she tossed the wreath into the water at the bridge for the Memorial Day Parade, taking the place of Walter, her husband, who died in 2001. She was a member of the West Waldoboro Church, where she was the church secretary for many years. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Johnson; and sisters Esther Dumont and Myrtle Kirkpatrick.Survivors include her son, Dana Johnson and his companion, Annette Gammon, of Waldoboro; daughter Elaine Upham and her husband, Robert, of Windsor; grandchildren David Upham and his companion, Colleen Howe, of Windsor, Lindsey Johnson Ward and her husband, Michael Ward, of Nobleboro, Jill Johnson and her companion, Lance Lee, of Waldoboro, and Rachel Johnson Black and her husband, Colby Black, of Waldoboro; great-grandchildren Dominic Upham, of Windsor, Grace and Claire Ward, of Nobleboro, Cora and Ivy Lee, of Waldoboro, and Miley Black, of Waldoboro; sister Alma Jones, of Washington; brothers Jim Grinnell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Washington, Donnie Grinnell and his wife, Lorraine, of Washington, and Gordy Grinnell and his wife, Ginny, of Washington; sisters-in-law Ruthie Hinckley, of New Hampshire, Ida Dumont, of Sanford, and Eva McLain, of Waldoboro; brothers-in-law Jesse Johnson and his wife, Wynona, of Waldoboro, Dick Goff and his wife, Dolly, of New Hampshire, and Raymond Kennedy, of Waldoboro; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends Arlene Eugley, of Waldoboro, and Chris and Jim Sproul, of Boothbay.Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of her life will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27, at Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in the German Protestant Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Barbara's memory to the West Waldoboro Community Church, c/o John Blamey, 75 Ledges Circle, Waldoboro, ME 04572.Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
