BAR HARBOR - Barbara Gray, 79, died peacefully May 8, 2010, at Mount Desert Island Hospital from complications of Alzheimer's. Barbara was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Walter Sargent Jr. and Ruth Higgins Sargent. She began her life's journey at "Old Homestead Farm," Norway Drive, Bar Harbor. Barbara attended Emery District School and graduated from Bar Harbor High School, June 10, 1948. Barbara married Brad Gray, June 12, 1948, and they had two sons, Wally and Ted. Barb and Brad purchased Whitney's Store in 1948, which they operated until 1956. She was then employed by Fred C. Lynam Insurance Co. Next, Barb and Brad purchased the family dairy business, which they operated for several years, and afterward purchased Emery's Cottages and operated them for 27 years. She fully enjoyed giving hospitality to the guests at Emery's. Barbara remained in touch with many of them long after she retired. For many years she was an active member of Eden Mother's Club. Barbara was predeceased by her parents; and only brother, Bud Sargent. Barb is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Brad; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wally and Carol, and Ted and Patricia, all of Bar Harbor; three grandchildren, Rebecca and her husband, Logan Thornton of Georgia, Brandon Gray and his wife, Becky, of Hermon, and Jennifer Gray of Bangor; and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Kendall Thornton of Georgia, who Barbara just adored.
