MILES _ Barbara Christeena Miles RN, born June 4, 1911 near Reston, Manitoba, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Windermere Care Centre, Vancouver on September 4, 2006. She is survived by and sorely missed by her loving husband John Henry (Jack) Miles in the 68th year of their marriage. They were married during the Dirty 30's in 1938 and from this humble beginning had three sons, Colin (Winnie), Evan (Brenda), and Lindsay (Edwina), 10 grandchildren Glenn (Jodi), Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jillian, Tony, Rosemary, Michelle, Jessica, Kyle, Jenelle and 2 great-grandchildren, Leighla and Sydney. She loved her family and was fiercely proud of them. She wanted to be remembered as a Registered Nurse. She trained at Providence Hospital and gave many years of devoted service at Norway House in Northern Manitoba (where she had a team of huskies), in rural Saskatchewan and at the Misericordia and most importantly at the Charles Camsell Hospital in Edmonton. Barbara and Jack moved to Vancouver to be closer to their sons in 1999 after living in Edmonton since 1954. Barbara has one living sister, Frances Bailey in Toronto, Ontario. She was pre-deceased by her siblings Murdock McIver, Elizabeth Harris, Al McIver, Isabel Gillespie, Marie Novikoff and Colin McIver. Barbara was very proud of her Scottish - Canadian heritage and she was known and respected for her principles such as compassion, courage, determination, optimism and ability to see the best in others. Raised on a farm in Manitoba, Barbara developed a love and respect for life in all its forms and a fascination for all things live and mechanical. At the age of 16 years she completely disassembled and then reassembled a Model "A" Ford, shot rapids in a canoe, broke horses and did ice racing with a sail driven "skate". She boasted that she used her earnings as a young mother to buy a piano for the house before a fridge. Barbara loved nature and often wrote letters expressing her joy at the wonder of creation, including poems about her beloved trees. Barbara was sorely tested by illness throughout her life. She beat tuberculosis 3 times, a ruptured appendix, paralyzing strokes, heart problems, the loss of a daughter and sudden onset of blindness in later years. Any one of these could have been emotionally, mentally and physically devastating, but not to Barbara who conquered them. She became stronger, more compassionate and passionate about all life and with an incredible ability to attract friends from all walks of life and is loved and remembered by all who met her. The family is very thankful for the loving and thoughtful care she received from the staff at the Windermere Care Centre in Vancouver and previously at Rideau Manor in Burnaby. A Funeral Service of Thanksgiving will be held in St. Andrew's United Church in Edmonton on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 11 am, followed by interment at the Northern Lights Cemetery. A Celebration of Barbara's Life of will be held on Wednesday at 3 P.M. in Vancouver at St. Andrew's Wesley Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Barbara's memory.
