HAMPTON, Va. -- Barbara Ann "Babs" Murphy, 83, widow of William Charles Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011. Born in Waterville, Maine, she had been a Hampton resident since 1994.Always a genuine person, her laughter and love will be missed. Babs was a special woman, and far from typical. When she moved with her husband from New England to live with their daughter, Kelly, she didn't expect to find the hot weather that Hampton Roads had to offer. Let's just say air-conditioning became her new religion. Her time in Virginia saw some changes, including finding the courage to drive a car again (after years of avoiding them), flying in a plane, and quitting smoking. A day wasn't complete for Babs without a grilled cheese, a crossword puzzle and a Milky Way bar. Her love of chocolate could only be eclipsed by her love of Elvis. Her home was decorated with Elvis memorabilia -- all given to her by friends. She would often be seen singing away to her favorite Elvis DVD in her sunroom, blissfully unaware of anything else. A favorite day for her was bargain hunting and going out to lunch. Always quick to make a joke, her advice was often straight to the point and straight from the heart. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, and the people in her life benefited from her quick and playful wit and generous personality.Surviving are her daughters, Leslie C. McClellan and Kelly J. Murphy, both of Hampton; grandson Christopher McClellan; and brother Philip E. Mitchell of Detroit, Mich.
