BROWN, BETTY JOYCE MURPHREE 74, passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2011 surrounded by her family. Known to all as a woman of strength and dignity. She will be in our hearts forever as her journey on earth has been done. Ms. Brown was involved in a car accident 38 years ago that left her paralyzed. Although it was tragic, she did not let her disability keep her from living an independent life. She was an advocate for the handicapped in Alabama. She was born in Decatur. Ms. Brown raised her family in Birmingham and lived her last few years in Gardendale. She was a member of Victory Christian Fellowship and with her faith persevered until she went home. Ms. Brown worked at Penny Palmer in Homewood until her accident in 1973. Ms. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Van Murphree, Sr. and Claudie Fisch; her two brothers, Fred Van Murphree, Jr. and Arthur "Bubba" Murphree. She is survived by her children, Michael Brown (Jan), Lynn Brown and Sheila Youngblood (Danny); her five grandchildren: Dan Youngblood III, Kerri Couch, Jason Brown, Jessica Brown and Shelby Brown; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011 at Elmwood Chapel at 1:00 with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you do a random act of kindness for someone with a disability. >
