BARBARA NORTON FLEMING - HOLYOKE, Mass. - Barbara Norton Fleming, 84, died March 18, 2012, due to complications of Alzheimer's in St Mary's Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. The daughter of William and Estelle Norton, Barbara was a Holyoke native and 80 year resident of the Highlands neighborhood. She graduated from Holyoke High School in 1945 and Connecticut College in 1949. She went on to earn her Master's degree in education from Boston University in 1953. Barbara taught fifth grade at Vernon St School in Northampton before raising her family and later working at the Open Window Book Shop in Chicopee, Mass. Barbara served on the Holy Cross parish council for many years and she was an enthusiastic member of the Connecticut College Alumni Association. She counted her high school and college classmates as some of her dearest friends and in her later years, she enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe with them. She is survived by her four children, James J. Fleming of Southampton, Mass., and his wife, Kate, William N. Fleming of Seattle, John T. Fleming of Worcester, Mass., and his wife, Beth, and Kathleen A. Fleming of Charlotte and her husband, Mark Franceschetti; and her nine grandchildren, Marykate, Jamie and Libby Fleming of Southampton, Mass., Fran, Will, CC and Grace Fleming of Worcester, Mass., and Anna and Joey Franceschetti of Charlotte. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Rita Fleming Johnson of Agawam, Mass.; brothers-in-law, Bernard Fleming and his wife, Dot, of Hyannis, Mass., and Richard Fleming of Longmeadow, Mass.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Barbara made lifelong friends wherever she went, and will be remembered for her patience, kindness and sense of humor. We will all miss her quiet dignity and grace. Calling hours are Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Hobert's Funeral Home, Holyoke, Mass., from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral will be at Our Lady of the Cross, Friday, March 23, 2012, at 10 a.m. Donations in her name may be made to Providence Ministries, Holyoke, Mass.
