AUDREY JANE SWANTON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, Audrey Jane Swanton. Audrey passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 24, 2005. Audrey was predeceased by her parents, Stan and Ethel Mae Hyatt; first husband, Gordon Lee; second husband, Red Swanton; sons, Garry and Wayne; sisters, Lorna Lloyd and Yvonne Hughes; and daughter-in-law, Luanne Lee. Audrey was born and raised in Barwick, Ont. Her early years were spent with her parents, Stan and Ethel Mae Hyatt, and sisters, Dorothy, Evelyn, Yvonne, and Lorna. Audrey met and married Gordon Lee. Together, they raised four sons on a farm in Blackhawk. Amid all the hard work, these years spent with family and friends were some of her most enjoyable times. Gordon Lee passed away in 1963. Later, she married Red Swanton, who introduced her to the world of aviation. Together, they owned and operated Bordaire Ltd. During this period, their time was divided between Dryden, Ont. and Fort Frances, often flying their grandchildren to Dryden for weekends. Audrey and Red took every opportunity they could to visit friends in various parts of Canada and the U.S. Red Swanton passed away in 1980. At the age of 52, Audrey took up downhill skiing. For several years, she spent winter holidays in Aspen, Colo., enjoying this sport with her sister, Dorothy, and her brother-in-law, Ed. Audrey also enjoyed curling, hunting, fishing, and blueberry picking with the boys. She was a life-long member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She also was an “avid” Bingo player. She was a very hard worker who loved gardening, especially flowers. Audrey was a wonderful cook and her home often was filled with the delicious aroma of freshly-baked bread. She is survived by her sons, Brian (Janet) and their children, Sheena (Jim) and Amanda (Dallas), and Doug (Patty-Ann) and his son, Gordon; and daughter-in-law, Donna and children, Tracey (Kyle) and Aimee (Greg). She also is survived by great-grandchildren, Taylor, Thane, and Randi-Rae, Justin, Brinna, Owen, Carly, and Braedon. Also left to mourn are sisters, Dorothy Butlin and Evelyn (Bob) Cottam; stepson, Don (Bev) Swanton; and stepdaughter, Lynne (Jim) Kafus. Audrey also will be missed by her special family, Bob and Sharon Martindale and their children, Matthew and Liska; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Audrey accepted her illness and the end of her life’s journey with grace and no fear. She died in her own bed with the dignity she deserved. We will miss her dearly, but “O what a grand reunion it must have been.” A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Knox United Church in Fort Frances. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to the UNFC food bank.
