Unsung American Hero and World War II veteran, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Arthur D. Bourque, U.S. Air Force, 91, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011, in his home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine F. Bourque. Art was born in Chicago on Nov. 25, 1919, to Robert and Frieda Bourque. He will be remembered as a loving husband and devoted father. Art was an avid fisherman, exceptional pilot, and past member of many local organizations and clubs. He served on active duty for 32 years with the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot prior to his retirement in Fort Walton Beach. Art also flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Battle of Britain prior to his transfer to the Army Air Corps (following the entry of the U.S. into World War II) and later served in the Pacific theater, where he shot down two enemy planes on one mission. Art's adventures and exploits during his long military career have been documented in several books and featured magazine articles. He was truly an unsung American Hero.Art is survived by his son, Bob (Sandy) Edenfield; and a daughter, Dorothy Owsley; grandchildren, Amber (Matt) Hentges, Richard (Elizabeth) Edenfield and Latifa Owsley; and great-grandchildren, Mark, Molly and Jade. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Lee.Services and interment, with military honors, will take place in Chicago at Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery, 11333 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn, IL 60453, on Friday, March 18, with visitation starting at 1 p.m. and the funeral at 2 p.m.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SOCKS, 498 Carmel Drive, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32578.
