Arthur Calvin Henderson 1925-2013 It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Arthur Calvin Henderson at the Veterans’ Health Unit, Fredericton, NB, on January 8, 2013. Arthur was the husband of the late Muriel (MacDonald) Henderson. He was born June 20, 1925 in MacLellan’s Brook, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, the son of the late David and Annie (Wallace) Henderson. His dignity, grace, courage and faith were evident all through his life, and never more so than when he faced his final battle with cancer. Arthur proudly served with the First Canadian Parachute Battalion during the Second World War. Following discharge from the Armed Forces, he attended Maritime Business College in New Glasgow NS, and joined the Federal Government with Canada Post in New Glasgow, rising to the position of Postmaster in both Oxford NS and Labrador City NL. In 1971, he moved to Fredericton, NB to work with the Unemployment Insurance Commission, eventually moving on to Health and Welfare Canada where he was the District Manager until his retirement in 1983. Arthur worked diligently and conscientiously for the community. He was very active in all the Presbyterian churches where he lived, serving as Church School Superintendent, choir member, member Board of Managers, and ordained Elder. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in both Oxford, NS and Fredericton, and was a Charter Member and Life Member of the Fredericton Golden Club; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in New Glasgow, Labrador City, and Fredericton where he was Branch President, Life Member, and Honourary President; a member of the First Canadian Parachute Battalion Association; and a faithful volunteer with the Fredericton Community Kitchen for 17 years. Arthur was recently honoured in 2012 on the Floor of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly for his contributions to his community and his country. He was the beloved father of Cheryl (David) Gordon in Guelph ON, Davida (Malcolm) Mackay in Halifax NS, Jeanne Kaye (Richard) Speight, Lloyd (Jennifer Cox), and Tom (Cathy Scott), all of Fredericton NB. He was the cherished grandfather of Brian Gordon, Andrea Gordon-Beenhakker (Pieter), Andrew Speight (Catherine), Peter Speight, Natalie Lafleche (Patrick), Alex Henderson (Zoe), Suzanne Gaudett (Garry), Heather Henderson, Matthew Henderson, Jessie Scott-Henderson and Mharie Scott-Henderson. He was the dear great-grandfather of Gabriel Lafleche. He is also survived by his sister Muriel Henderson in Toronto, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife and parents; brothers Andrew, Albert, Wallace, and Harry, and sisters Evelyn and Frances. Arthur was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. Visitation will take place at McAdam’s Funeral Home, York Street, Fredericton on Friday, January 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4 Tribute Service will be held on Friday, January 11 at 7:00 pm at McAdam’s Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 pm at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 512 Charlotte Street, Fredericton, on Saturday, January 12, with the Reverend Douglas Blaikie officiating. Interment will take place later in the year at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Sylvester, Pictou County, NS. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Fredericton, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4 Poppy Fund, 199 Queen Street, Fredericton NB E3B 1A6, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
