Lifelong Cleghorn Resident FITCHBURG -- Annette M. (Beauvais) Richard, 91, of Fitchburg, died Saturday, April 28 at the Highlands surrounded by her loving family. She was fondly known as "Memere" or "Mem" by her family and many others. She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Leo "L.J." Richard on September 17, 2011.She was born May 2, 1920, in Fitchburg, daughter of the late Wilfred and Emma (Goyette) Beauvais, and has lived in Fitchburg all her life.She and Leo Richard married on July 22, 1940. Prior to that, she worked at Asher Pant Company in Fitchburg. In 1943, they opened Leo's Self Service on Pershing Street, which then became Leo's Meat Market, and ultimately L.J. Richard Caterers. Mrs. Richard worked alongside her husband and helped her children in their businesses, Christian Courier, JR Photo, and Susan Cronin Draperies.She was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph Church, a long-time member of the Lady of Saint Anne's group, and was a volunteer at Burbank Hospital for over 25 years.Mr. and Mrs. Richard took great pride in their family. With three children, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, they commented on how they "brought 28 wonderful people into the world." They often said how proud they were of each one. Known for their love, hospitality and caring of others, they always hosted holiday festivities and were known to have parties on Saturdays for many years. Family gatherings often include over 40 people, including extended family. Mr. and Mrs. Richard were known to be very loving -- the Richard family remains extremely close. Family routinely credit them for serving as kind, loving examples to them all.Mrs. Richard was always very welcoming to visitors to her home, never allowing them to leave without a full meal and without taking desserts and snacks with them when they left. She was said to have a way of making everyone she greeted feel like they were the most important person in the world.She was an avid seamstress, and card player. When someone needed help with hemming clothes, or costumes for Halloween or school plays, she was always willing to lend a hand. She also taught her crafts to the generations that followed.Mrs. Richard treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and played a very active role in their lives. They remember her fondly for her kindness, her willingness to play, and the snacks she prepared for them, which were always made with love (and a lot of butter).A proud lifelong resident of Fitchburg, and Cleghorn in particular, she was even named "Miss Cleghorn" in the late 1930s.She leaves her three children: Judith A. Coderre and her husband, Richard of Nashua, NH; James L. Richard and his wife, Nancy of Fitchburg; and Susan D. Cronin and her husband, Edward of Fitchburg; seven grandchildren: Michael Gould and his wife, Mary Ellen; Brian Gould and his wife, Jodi all of Nashua, NH; Julie-Anne Hyvarinen and her husband, Barry of Fitchburg; Joey Richard and his wife, Heidi of Worcester; Aaron Carter and his wife, Junko of Somerville; Cicely Carter and her spouse, Nichole of Fitchburg; and Jessica Cronin of Medford; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her two sisters, Blanche DesChenes and Theresa Delke, both of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.She was also predeceased by her sisters Florence Pineault Brown, Irene Roy and Lucille Vincent, her brother Leo Beauvais, and her granddaughter, Kristen Carter.The family would like to thank the staff at the Highlands for their exceptional care.RICHARD -- The funeral will be held from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg, on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 with a Mass in St. Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St. at 12:00 Noon. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to Saint Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg, MA 01420, or to the Highlands Resident Activity Fund, 335 Nichols Rd., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
