Anne Rhea Beard Douglas, 90, of Columbus, Ga., died Monday, March 8, 2010. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Right Rev. and Rector Rich Martindale and the Rev. Tom Jones officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Ga. A private burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Scott Douglas, Laurence (Leslie) Douglas, Kaa Blue, George Blue, Ryan O'Dea and Lauton Sutley. Honorary pallbearers are Augustus Dudley, M.D., Phil Latimer, George Shannon, M.D., and John Robert Smith, D.M.D.Mrs. Douglas was born in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 1920, the daughter of George Rogers (her mother) and Leslie Patton Beard. She attended Lindenwood University before transferring to Purdue University, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. It was at Purdue, too, where she met her husband, Frederick Douglas, and they were married in New Orleans on May 9, 1942.Her husband was, by training, a metallurgist, and after his war service, the family moved to Florence, Ala., where her husband worked for Reynolds Aluminum. He was subsequently assigned to Tokyo, Japan, and during this assignment, Mrs. Douglas eschewed expatriate isolation in favor of immersing herself in Japanese culture: They chose lodgings outside the normal western residential area, and she studied local crafts, excelling in ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. At the end of this assignment, the Douglas's returned to Alabama and later moved to Columbus.Throughout her life, Mrs. Douglas loved to travel; she sailed around the world with her mother and sister, and later made numerous trips to Europe, as well as visits to Canada, Israel and many sites in the United States.For most of her adult life, she was active in the Colonial Dames, the DAR and the Kappa Kappa Gamma alumnae. In Columbus, she served in the Newcomers group, and later, in the Chattahoochee Valley Episcopal Ministry. She also was on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries in Columbus.Mrs. Douglas was preceded in death by her husband of almost 62 years, Frederick Orrin Douglas, and daughter, Georgia Burlin Douglas.She is survived by three children, Elizabeth Douglas Hamblin (Greg), of Olympia, Wash., Frederick Patton Douglas (Anna), of Lake Harding, Ala., Lindsay Douglas Sutley (Larry), of Lillian, Ala.; four grandchildren, Charles Leslie Douglas (Kay), of Cypress, Texas, Marianna Douglas O'Dea (Ryan), of Maumelle, Ark., Katherine Lindsay Sutley, of Savannah, Ga., Lawrence (Lauton) Sutley, of Charleston, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Lauren and Brady Douglas, of Cypress, Texas, and Margaret and Hayden O'Dea, of Maumelle, Ark. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, two nephews and a niece, Val Douglas, of Alpharetta, Ga., Kaa Blue, George Blue, both of New Orleans, and Leslie Stevens, of Glenmore, Pa. On her husband's side, survivors include J. Scott Douglas, of Alpharetta, Ga., Carolyn Marlowe, of Walnut Creek, Calif., Kathy Setash, of Newton, Pa.Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church Organ Fund, Chattahoochee Valley Humane Society, Columbus Hospice and Goodwill Industries.Condolences may be offered at shcolumbus.com.
