Born in Philadelphia, PA, November 3, 1912, Dr. Anne, as she was known to all, was the daughter of Joseph and Katherine Seitz Bernauer. After the death of her older sister, Katie, in the epidemic of 1917, the family moved to Williamstown, NJ. Dr. Anne was a graduate of Glossboro High School, where she was named to the school's Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001. After pre-med studies at Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA, she attended Temple University Medical College from which she graduated in 1938, one of six women in a class of 120. Dr. Anne and Dr. Bill were married at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Wellsboro, on August 16, 1939, and established their practice as general practitioners in Wellsboro. During Dr. Bill's service in World War II, from 1941 to 1945, in the Army Medical Corps in Australia, New Guinea and the Phillippines, Dr. Anne carried on their medical practice, as she did again when Dr. Bill retired in 1961 after suffering a stroke. Prior to Dr. Bill's death in 1973, they were able to travel to such places as Tokyo and Hong Kong and to take a Rhine River cruise. Dr. Anne continued to travel, including an around-the-world tour and a lengthy visit through India in the company of her son, Michael, who was serving there as a Peace Corps volunteer. After closing her office practice in 1976, she continued to assist in surgery at the Hospital until 1984. In 1989 Dr. Anne was honored by the Tioga County Medical Society in recognition of 50 years of dedicated service. She was also a 50 year member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and a life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Anne was also a member of the BPW, the Friends of the Wellsboro Library, the Tyoga Country Club, the Art Club, the Wednesday Morning Musicals, the Ramblers Club and the Women of the Moose.
