Avis de décès de Anna Smith

Anna Smith, 98 NORTH YARMOUTH -- Anna Shirley (Meserve) Smith, of North Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2014. She was born on Nov. 22, 1915, in Scarborough, the first child of Nelson and Bertha (Morse) Meserve. Anna lived with her aunt and uncle during high school because there was no way she could get from her house to Scarborough High School in a timely fashion. She graduated from Westbrook High School in 1933 and then graduated from Gorham Normal School (now the University of Southern Maine) with her teaching degree in 1935. Anna spent several years on Chebeague Island teaching school and waiting tables at the Inn. She loved her time on the island and stayed in touch with many of the families she met there. Anna left Chebeague to teach in a one room schoolhouse in North Yarmouth which is where she met her husband, Norman L. Smith. They were married on June 18, 1944, in Scarborough and built a house in North Yarmouth where they lived for almost 70 years. Anna stopped teaching school when she gave birth to twin boys (Norman and Nelson) in 1947 and focused her time on raising them. She was very proud of her twins and was a doting mother who always had freshly baked cookies, pies, or her famous rainbow bars in the kitchen for her boys and in later years for her grandchildren to enjoy. Anna also enjoyed sewing, rug braiding, crafts, knitting and wearing the color purple. She knit many sweaters, mittens, and hats for her children and grandchildren over the years. Anna also took great interest in her community by volunteering for Well Baby Clinics, serving as registrar of voters, joining the Westcustogo Grange where she was active in Juvenile and State Grange and becoming one of the early members of the North Yarmouth Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary, including serving as president for a number of years. She was an active member of Cumberland County Extension and supported 4H activities. Anna was also an active member of the North Yarmouth Congregational Church for many years with the Women's Fellowship and as one of the original 'Tuesday Gals' who spent countless hours working on projects for the annual church fair in November. In the late 70s, Anna Smith Lindquist Funeral Home Funeral Home & Cremation Service 846-4011 she became 'Grammie Ann' at Sunday School when her grandchildren started attending. Soon all the children and many of the adults started calling her this name because it fit her so well. She and her late husband Norman would be shopping and little ones would see them and say hello to 'Grammie Ann' and 'Grandpa Ann.' How they both so enjoyed that! Anna is survived by twin sons, Norman Lester Smith and wife Donna, and Nelson Leighton Smith and wife Candace, all of North Yarmouth; grandchildren, Kent and wife Alexandra, Andrew and wife Anne, Craig and wife Heidi, and Christa Ayer and husband Lloyd; and great-grandchildren, Madison, Cayden, Sophie, Kendall, Avery, Anderson, Gracin, Norman, Hope and Laci. Also surviving Anna are her brother, Maynard Meserve of Gorham; sisters-in-law, Barbara Parker and Norma Smith, both of North Yarmouth, and Arline Calvert of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Anna was predeceased on Oct. 9, 2014, by her beloved husband of 70 years, Norman. She was also predeceased by her parents; her brother, Joseph Meserve; and her cousin, Alma Libby, whom she thought of as her 'twin' sister. Her family wishes to thank Coastal Manor and Beacon Hospice for their countless acts of kindness to her and the family. Visiting hours will be on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, from 5-7 p.m., at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
