CARTER Ann Shaw Carter, the beloved wife of the late Edward Carter, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2005, at Bridgeport Hospital. Loving mother of Janet Persen, Misty Beyer and Jim Carter; and grandmother of eight, Jessica Gruber, Caitlin Carter, Kerry Persen, Julie Carter, James Carter Jr. Mackenzie Persen, Jackie Carter, Alex Beyer. As a polio survivor, she moved beyond her limitations to become very involved in numerous community and political organizations. She was a passionate advocate for open space, an avid gardener, a skilled artist and a community activist. She was very concerned about preserving the unique character of Fairfield. In her past, she was a member of the WASP during World War II and she became the first woman to get her helicopter license which established her as one of the first members of the Whirley Girls. She has been honored for her accomplishments as the recipient of numerous community awards, such as, the Fairfield Civitan and Paul Harris Community Service Awards. She was also the recipient of the Livingston award for her exceptional contribution to the recognition and advancement of women in helicopter aviation. Ann's generosity and undying love for her community affected everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and those who benefited from her contributions to the Town of Fairfield. A memorial service will be held in the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 30.
