Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at Morgan Funeral Chapel for Ann Marie Cleveland Williams, 70, Walnut Grove, Ala., who died Jan. 14, 2014. The Rev. Vicki Cater will officiate. Burial will be in Altoona-Walnut Grove Cemetery. Morgan Funeral Chapel and Crematory directing."I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). On Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, a family lost a loving matriarch, peers lost a faithful friend and the town of Walnut Grove lost its most dedicated citizen with the passing of Ann Cleveland Williams. Her loving heart, her tireless spirit and her quick wit will be missed by all who knew her.Ann Marie Cleveland was born on October 14, 1943, in Walnut Grove, Ala., where she was to live her entire life. She graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1961 and remained an avid alumna, forever hailing the "Blue and Gold" of her beloved school. Ann worked diligently to promote community pride through organizing school reunions and community activities, bringing Walnut Grove Tigers back home from all over the country. When the school became West End, she adopted the new school and supported it with equal fervor and affection.Ann was employed at several poultry plants throughout her career. She retired from Goodyear in 1999, after 20-plus years. Whatever the job, Ann was a diligent employee who firmly believed in giving an honest day's work for a day's wage.Ann was dedicated to her community and was very involved in civic activities. She was an active member of the West End Lions Club. She organized community fundraising events to support the work of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital where in excess of $125,000 was collectively raised. She was a member of the Etowah County Democratic Party, working in both local and state elections. After retirement, she became an active member of the Walnut Grove Senior Citizens Program.Ann was an avid fan of Alabama football. In recognition of this, friends are encouraged to wear Alabama colors or the colors of their favorite team.Ann was preceded in death by her parents, A.B. and Myrtle Cleveland; sisters, Martha Ford and Carolyn Landers; brother, Arnold Cleveland Jr. and her beloved niece, Diane Franklin."On the County's Western border, Reared against the sky……."Survivors: husband of 53 years, Edward (Ned) Williams; daughter, Sheila (Michael) Thompson; grandchildren, who were literally the loves of her life, Cody Thompson and Saleta Thompson; sister, Sammye Sansom; brothers, Jerry (Betty) Cleveland, Douglas M. Cleveland; host of nieces and nephews.Pallbearers: nephews, Eddie Cleveland, Shawn Cleveland, Steve Landers, John Sansom, Russell Sansom, Scott Sansom and Jay Franklin.Honorary pallbearers: Walnut Grove High School Class of 1961 and Walnut Grove Senior Citizens Center.The family wishes to thank the many friends and neighbors for prayers, calls, cards, visits and food during Ann's extended illness. They also want to thank Alacare Hospice with special thanks to Amanda Collins, Sherry Baswell and Stella Rogers for the special and kind loving care they provided.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Morgan Funeral Chapel.There will not be a graveside service following the funeral.
