Angela C. Fleming 1936-2010 BRATTLEBORO Angela Carroll Fleming, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2010 with her family present following a brave and stoic battle with ovarian cancer. Miss Fleming was born on April 1, 1936 in Brattleboro, Vermont, the daughter of Richard A. and Mary Alice (Barile) Fleming. Angela graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1954 and from the University of Vermont, School of Dental Hygiene in 1956. Following graduation, she pursued her professional career as a dental hygienist. Over the next 45 years, she was employed at the Brattleboro Retreat and the offices of Roy Neumeister, DDS, John Mann, DDS and most recently at Dental Health until her retirement in 2001 and was a lifetime member of the Vermont Dental Hygienist Association. She was a member of the Windham County Cloggers, the Strolling of the Heifers' Committee and the Brattleboro Historical Society. Angela was happiest when interacting with children. She introduced family traditional nursery rhymes enthusiastically to the newest generation. Her charisma was such that her magnetism attracted the love and trust of all whom she came in contact. She was very artistic which was evident in her creative sense of style. Her many talents included painting, stenciling, theorem and knitting. In her earlier years, she enjoyed skiing, skating and instructing majorette baton twirling. Angela traveled extensively. She especially enjoyed her many trips to the small villages in Ireland and Italy researching her family heritage. Her strong faith and positive outlook was inspirational to others also struggling with cancer. She was a devout Catholic and a life-time communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Angela served as a member of the Diocesan Rural Ministry Program and an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Angela is survived by her twin sister, Sister Kathleen Fleming SSJ, brother, Richard J. Fleming, his wife, Barbara and sister, Elaine F. Shield; nieces and nephews include Anne Valgoi and her husband, Renee of Alpharetta, Ga.; Richard Fleming, Jr. and wife, Amy of Holyoke, Mass.; Katherine Fleming of Marlboro, Vt.; Paul Shield, Jr. and his wife, Maire O'Neill of New York, N.Y.; William Shield and his wife, Vicki of Mansfield, Mass.; Carol Sonntag and her husband, Jeffrey of Austin, Texas; Joseph Shield and his wife, Lori of Avon, Conn.; Francis Shield and his wife, Sherryl of Spofford, N.H.; Margaret Fleming of Jeffersonville, Vt.; Daniel Shield and his wife, Claire, of Mansfield, Mass.; as well as many grand nieces and grand nephews. Miss Fleming was predeceased by her father, Richard A. and her mother, Mary Alice (Barile) Fleming. FUNERAL NOTICE: Visiting hours will be Tuesday evening, October 12, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m. at ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro, Vt. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Brattleboro, Vt. on Wednesday, October 13, at 11 a.m. The Mass will be con-celebrated by Reverend Richard O'Donnell, pastor and Reverend William Sheehan, OMI, former pastor. Burial and Committal Rites will follow in the Fleming family lot in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Angela's name may be made to St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 47 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
