Andrew E. 'Gramps' Mercier1916 -- 2010 WILBRAHAM -- Andrew E. "Gramps" Mercier, 94 years young, of Dracut, and most recently of Wilbraham, passed away Monday October 18, 2010, at his Wilbraham residence, with his family by his side.He was born in Lowell on February 16, 1916, a son of the late Ernest and Annie (Dupuis) Mercier.Gramps attended Lowell catholic schools until the 10th grade when he left in 1944 to enlist in the Army during WWII, where he was aboard the Queen Mary to Normandy. While serving with the 115th Infantry Regiment, Gramps received numerous medals.Upon returning home, he met and married Letty McGowan who became his wife of 45 years.Gramps' entire career was employed at the E.N. Rogers Veterans Hospital in Bedford for 30 years until his retirement in 1991.Gramps leaves his grandchildren to cherish his memory, Mike and Laurie, Heather and Ellie Mercier, Mary Jane and Kevin Laplante, all of Wilbraham; his great-grandchildren, Brandson Mercier and his wife, Sarah of Agawam, Madison Laplante of Wilbraham; sisters-in-law, Alice Lagassi of Lynn, Gertrude Sweet of Lowell; his special friend and caregiver, Wendy Porter of Lowell, Delores Ceife of Lowell; and many friends at Dracut Housing where he resided for 25 years.Gramps was predeceased by his son, Douglas in 2003, his daughter-in-law, Charlotte in 2008, his sister, Rita, and brothers, Omar and Raymond.MERCIER -- It being his request, calling hours are omitted.
