AMY FOWLER WILLIAMS, C.M. On April 14, 2010, with an uncharacteristic reluctance to take on this, her latest project, our beloved Amy, Mum and Grammie, Amy Pauline Fowler Williams, passed on from this life on her journey toward her maker. Amy leaves to mourn her husband, Dr. Keith Quirk and her three children, Glen and Dale (Barry Garner) Williams of Montreal and Heather (Steve Cavanagh) Williams of Ottawa and her grandchildren Laura and Jeffrey Garner, Antoine Panaioti and Thomas Williams. Amy was predeceased by Jack Williams, her husband of 43 years. Amy was born August 3, 1927 in La Oroya Peru, the only child of two Canadian expatriates, metallurgical engineer Wallace Fowler of Westmount, QC and nurse Mary Donoghue of Kemptville, ON. After Mary's untimely death, Amy moved to Canada where she spent her teenage years at King's Hall, Compton, QC. She attended McGill University (B.A. '49.) After graduation, she married Jack and together they raised their three children in Lachine, QC. Amy lived a life of service to a host of social causes. She was president of the Montreal Council of Women and the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC.) Amy also represented Canada on the International Council of Women. As president of the NCWC, Amy was a full-time advocate for women on such issues as health, education and the environment. She chaired a two-year study of the financial status of older women across Canada; subsequent lobbying resulted in changes to pension legislation. For this, in addition to all her other efforts on behalf of her various communities, Amy was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1985. Fifty years after her last contact with Keith Quirk, whom she knew from McGill, Keith called. They were married in 2002 and moved to North Bay, ON. Amy of La Oroya became Amy of the North. Amy will be fondly remembered by Keith's daughters, Jan (Dan) Phillips (Shanty Bay, ON), Sherry (Karl) Deutschmann (Graz, Austria) and Robin (Alert Bay, B.C.), Laura (Willow Beach, ON), Amanda (Guelph, ON) and Sarah Quirk (Calgary) and by Keith's grandchildren Liesi, Karaline, Kristof and Irene Deutschmann, Jennie, Nathan and Nigel Phillips and Natalie Butler. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Montreal, 5035 boul. de Maisonneuve ouest (metro Vendome.) In lieu of flowers, Amy would have liked donations to be made to Auberge Madeleine (Montreal), the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
