Amanda Ellen Cox, 55, of Allenhurst passed away at her home Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015.Amanda was born Aug. 24, 1959, to the late William C. and Eugenia Barrs Cox in Savannah.Amanda moved to Allenhurst in 1959 when she was 1 week old. She was a graduate of Bradwell Institute, Class of 1977. After graduation Amanda attended Tift College, majoring in journalism. She studied photography, textile and ceramic design while attending Savannah College of Art and Design. Amanda graduated from SCAD in 1985 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Fiber. Amanda also obtained a Master Gardener's degree from the University of Georgia.She worked at Fort Morris and Seabrook Village Living History Farm, and made many of the gowns and clothing worn by the actors during the re-enactments. Amanda was the mayor pro-tem of Allenhurst, the town her father, William C. Cox, incorporated. She held the position of mayor pro-tem for the past seven years, since being elected to the Allenhurst City Council.Amanda was a strong willed and dedicated member of the council. She was instrumental in the restoration of the historic district on Dunlevie Road. She helped organize Allenhurst's centennial celebration in 2009, which recreated life in the 1900s when Allenhurst was a lumber community. The centennial celebration that she helped organize also helped establish the Jan and Dennis Waters Educational Center in Miller's Pasture, which was next door to Amanda's lifelong home.She was also an artist, jewelry maker, photographer, sculptor, herbalist and avid gardener. Amanda cultivated a variety of camellias native to the area. She enjoyed taking photographs during the bloom and many of her photographs are on display at the Liberty County Justice Center.Amanda was passionate about many things in life. She was an artist and a believer that true art lives through time. She was a lover of animals and thought that anyone who abused them should be thrown in a gator swamp. Amanda was truly one of a kind, and will be dearly missed by all of the lives that she touched.Amanda is survived by an aunt, Joyce Hodges; cousins, John David Wortham Jr., Kaitlin Hodges Stover and Paula Thomason; nieces, Patricia Anastasia Wortham and Victoria Elizabeth Wortham; close friends, Susan Todd, Grace Moran and Warren Brown; friends; and her beloved pets.A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, on the water at the Sunbury Crab Company in Sunbury.Honorary pallbearers will be members of Bradwell Institute Class of 1977 and the city of Allenhurst Mayor and Council members.In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Liberty Humane Shelter, PO Box 1481, Hinesville, GA 31310.Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
