The family of Alvin Lee Miller of Panama City is sad to announce the passing of our loving father and grandfather on April 10, 2011, at Panama City Nursing Center.He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Louse F. Miller; parents, Billy and Martha Miller; brothers, Henry, Lemuel, Jessie and Chester Miller; sisters, Kinnie McKeithan, Katie Kyser, Annie Kyser and Cora Youngblood; and baby sister, Willie Mae.Survivors include two daughters, Helen Sowell (Jerry) and Diane McGhee (Jim), all of Panama City; son, Rudolph Miller (Carol) of Southport; grandchildren, Gretchen Scaperotta (Joe), Jerry Sowell Jr. (Mary), Mark D. Sowell, Tracy Chesnee (Randy), Rudy Miller Jr. (Penny), Jackie Dalrymple (Mark) and Kim Whitehead (Robert); 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a very special sister-in-law, Argie Mason; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.Mr. Miller attended Southport School and later graduated from Monroe Business College in Panama City, Fla. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1946. As a young man, he worked in many different jobs: fishing, oystering and pulpwooding. He and his wife, Louise, owned a grocery store in Southport and a gas station in Panama City. In 1950, he began working at the Navy Mine Defense Laboratory. During his years of employment at the navy base, he received numerous certificates and awards, retiring in 1970.Mr. Miller was a charter member of the Harry Jackson Masonic Lodge in Lynn Haven for 60 years. He was also a Shriner, member of the Scottish Rite and a Master Mason. He and his wife, Louise, loved to hunt and fish. They could be seen in the Sand Hills hunting or on Deer Point lake fishing. They traveled to South Dakota and Colorado many times with family and friends hunting for mule deer and pheasant, camping in the mountains or staying with friends. Both were great hunters and fishermen, with many beautiful deer, turkey, pheasant, antelope and fish mounts in their home. For many years, he was in charge of the Miller family reunion. He enjoyed visiting with all his family members and friends. Everyone looked forward to eating raw oysters and sampling his famous oyster stew. He will always be remembered as "Uncle Alvin." Mr. Miller attended Central Pentecostal Ministries Church and the Golden Harvesters' Sunday School Class. He looked forward to Wednesday nights and Sundays to that he could go to church. He loved the Lord!A celebration of his life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hayward Youngblood and the Rev. T. A. Green officiating. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with military honors offered by the US Army and Masonic Rites at graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the funeral home. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Jerry F. Sowell Jr., Mark D. Sowell, Jerry F. Sowell III, Joe Scaperotta, Joseph Scaperotta, Rudy Miller Jr., Matthew Sowell and Randy Chesnee. Honorary bearers will be members of the Golden Harvesters' Sunday School Class. Those who wish may make contributions to either the Shaddai Shrine Children's Transportation Fund, 1101 W. 19th St., Panama City, FL 32405; or Covenant Hospice, 107 W. 19th St., Panama City, FL 32405. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Panama City Nursing Center, especially to Aline, Judy, Brenda, Vivian, Nadine, Angelina, Rea, Cleo, Donna, Rhonda, Doretha and Dr. Adhal for their loving care and concern during his stay.The greatest joy in our Daddy's life was being with his family.
