SMITH, Alton PeterInsurance ExecutivePassed away peacefully on January 31, 2012.Mr. Smith was born in Montreal on May 20, 1928, the youngest of Peter and Elizabeth (Hume) Smith. His father, a baker, passed away when he was seven. He grew up on Grand Boulevard in NDG during the war years, delivered Gazettes in the morning and Stars in the afternoon, and graduated from Westhill High School in 1948. A great high school football player, he also played tackle, running back and kicked for the NDG Maple Leafs junior football team.After completing his studies at MacDonald College, Mr. Smith began his insurance career in Toronto, and, in 1962, was transferred to Bogotá, Colombia with Royal Insurance Group. One of his proudest achievements of that time was helping to establish a preschool and clinic in Bogotá with other members of the Canadian expatriate community, which came to be known as "El Parque Canada."Returning to Montreal in 1967, he joined Dale Insurance Company in 1970 and retired as a partner with Dale Parizeau in December 1995.Mr. Smith was a former member of the Montreal Badminton and Squash Club, the Royal Montreal Golf Club, and the Knowlton Golf Club. Mr. Smith is predeceased by his mother, his sister Helen, his brothers Edgar and Kenneth, his step-sisters Flo and Elizabeth, and his step-brothers Redfern and Beaman.Mr. Smith was married to Martha Louise Spinney from 1952 until her death in 1982. They had four sons - Peter (Janis - Peter, Sarah), David (Kirsten - Martha), William (Clara -Christian, Matthew) and Andrew (Nancy - Olivia).Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Sonia Newman Raikes, whom he married in 1987. In addition to his sons and their families, he is also survived by his step-daughter Lucy Raikes Sofin (Andrew Sofin - Emily, Abbie), and his step-son Gregory Raikes.The family will be welcoming friends at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White, 5610 Sherbrooke St., W., on Friday, February 3 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 4 at 1:00 p.m. at The Church of The Ascension, Rt. 139-S in West Brome, QC. A reception will follow at Auberge West Brome.The family would also like to extend special thanks to the staff at Chateau Westmount, and to Lily Soriano and Morenike Fashola.
