Alton L. Smith, 90 GORHAM -- Alton L. Smith, 90, of New Portland Road and a long time former Westbrook resident, died on June 22, 2009, at the Gorham House. Born in Brewer on Dec. 18, 1918, he was the son of Perley and Lillian (Stanhope) Smith; he was raised and educated in Harrington. In 1937, Alton went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corp., known then as the CCC Boys, and from 1939 until 1944, he sailed the Great Lakes with the Columbia Transportation Company, of Cleveland, Ohio. In May of 1944, during WWII, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., seeing action on Okinawa during the invasion of 1945. Mr. Smith was employed for 29 years at the former S.D. Warren Paper Company of Westbrook, retiring from there in 1983. He was a member of the former United Methodist Church, in Westbrook, his interest included hunting, fishing and the Red Sox. His wife, Eva (Nash) Smith, predeceased him on April 22, 2008. A son Michael, a daughter Joan, as well as three brothers, Philip, William and Eugene and one sister Olie, have also predeceased him. Survivors include two daughters, Paulette Gallant of Scarborough and Priscilla Kennie and her husband Timothy of Dayton; two brothers, Perley Smith Jr. of Jay and Roland Smith of Machias, two sisters, Barbara Mitchell and Patricia Worcester, both of Harrington; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held along with Military honors at 11 a.m., Friday, June 26, 2009, at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. The Rev. David Patterson will officiate. Arrangements are by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. Our family would like to thank the staff of the Cambridge and Windsor Units of the Gorham House for the kind and compassionate care given to our Dad during his time there.
