Alma Rose Johnson, long time La Jolla resident, died July 25, 2010, at age 89 in Palo Alto, California, from recently-discovered widespread ovarian cancer. She lived 56 years on Rosemont Street in La Jolla moving last August to Palo Alto to be near her children. She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years Roy B. Johnson Jr. who died in November 2004.Alma was born in Jamestown, North Dakota, on November 30, 1920, the first of four daughters of Philip and Rose Bieber. She was baptized and confirmed at Jamestown's St. John's Lutheran Church, played violin, and graduated as an excellent student from Jamestown High School in 1937. She moved to Denver during World War II, met Lt. Roy B. Johnson Jr. of the Army Medical Corps. They married in Denver on May 12, 1945. After the war they moved to Sacramento where their two daughters, Carole and Barbara, were born – thirteen months apart.In 1953, Roy received an offer to run the laboratory for Scripps Clinic in La Jolla and the family relocated there. Alma and Roy joined Christ Lutheran Church in Pacific Beach, La Jolla Lamplighters, and Comida Club. Alma was a charter member of Children's Hospital Auxiliary and Torrey Pines Women Golfers and a member of Florence Riford Center and La Jolla Villagers. In her 50's she began taking art classes and became proficient with watercolors, acrylics, and pastels. She traveled widely; a highlight was attending the 1968 inauguration in Washington, DC.Alma is survived by her three sisters, two daughters and sons-in-law, two granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews. Family, faith, friends and neighbors were always very important to her.
