GUNTER , Allan Nelson Allan Nelson Gunter passed away peacefully on June 4, 2009 in Medicine Hat at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly sixty-seven years, Nora (Mitchell) in 2007, and by his parents Clarence and Edith Gunter. He is survived by his sister Hazel Bancroft, his daughters: Alexandra (Tom) McMeekin, Elizabeth Gunter, and Joan (Rod) McMillan, his grandchildren: Hilary McMeekin, Gregory McMeekin, James (Melissa) McMillan, and Alexandra (Kory) Hill; and his great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Ashton, Hunter and Hadyn. Allan was born and raised and educated in Edmonton, AB, graduating from University of Alberta with degrees in Civil and honors Chemical Engineering in 1937. He enjoyed a long and successful professional career, which he commenced working for the PFRA in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. He met Nora in Medicine Hat and they were married in Toronto in 1940, as Allan worked with CIL munitions during the war years in Nobel, Ontario. Allan and Nora returned to Medicine Hat with their first daughter, and Allan farmed at Burnside Farm and set up and operated a plumbing, heating and construction business which he ran for ten years. From 1959 to 1965 he was City Engineer in Medicine Hat. He then worked for the Federal Government in Ottawa in fleet management, and finished his working career in Calgary as a consulting engineer with Underwood & McClelland (UMA). During his retirement years, Nora and Allan lived in Victoria and Banff before eventually returning to live in Medicine Hat. Allan was devoted to his wife and family, and respected by his colleagues and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Nancy Cocks officiating. There will be a celebration of life following at the Cypress Centre, Fireside Room. As an expression of sympathy, those wishing to remember Mr. Allan Gunter may do so with a gift to a charity of one's choice.
