Peters, Babe Alice Hazel Lavina (nee Warren) It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear Mom and Grandma, Alice Babe Peters, on Friday, January 9, 2009, at the Lucky Lake Health Centre at the age of 91. She is survived by her five children: Hazel (Myron) Barton, Dennis (Connie) Peters, Diane Peters, Donna (Clarence) Procknow, and John (Linda) Peters; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren: Patty Watt (Cody and Jessica ), Robert (Leah) Barton (Zack and Jarrett); Brad Peters (Chance and Logan), Blake (Lynelle) Peters, Todd (Linda Goy) Peters; Rachel Wedley Peters, Evyn Wedley Peters; Jason Procknow (Jason Jr.), Mark Procknow, Karlyn Procknow; Jody (Terri) Peters (Matthew, Nathan, Rebecca and Carter), Erin Peters, and Tyler Peters; and by her older sister, Marjorie Fenton. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack James John Peters, in 1987, her youngest son, Dean Ward Peters, in 1979, her step-mother, Jessie Warren, in 1970, her father, John Warren, in 1948, her brother, Bertram Warren, in 1943, and her mother, Alice Lavina Warren (nee Gravette) in 1918. Alice was born on July 10, 1917, on the Warren homestead, the youngest child of one of the earliest pioneers in the Lucky Lake area (1905). She attended Crescent Valley School and took high school by correspondence, working alongside her parents on the farm. She married Jack Peters in 1943. After his return from World War II in 1946, Jack and Alice took over the Warren homestead and life centered on raising their six children and expanding and improving the family farm. While they originally lived in the house built by John Warren in 1910, in 1956 they built a new home overlooking the large coulee that ran through their land, naming the farm Crescent Coulee Farm. Now named Peters Farms, it has been farmed continuously by the family for over 100 years. Alice was a strong and resourceful prairie woman who managed to do it all with good humour to boot. An incredibly hard worker, she milked cows, shipping cream and making butter, raised chickens and turkeys, grew a huge garden to feed her family and helped the men with the farm work. She often canned up to 500 jars of preserves in summer. She was an excellent seamstress, making much of the family's clothing, and some of her children recall her staying up all night after the other work was done, to sew Halloween costumes or dresses, which magically appeared in the morning. Her baking and cooking were beyond compare. She loved to have company, never too busy to sit down and visit over a cup of tea, and always made sure there was enough for a few extra people at the supper table. She and the children liked entering the Agricultural Fairs and she won many prizes for her sewing and baking. In later years, she enjoyed many trips with Jack and with friends, thoroughly enjoyed being Grandma to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making quilts for all her family and for charity, reading, following hockey on TV, playing cards and board games, being involved with the Lucky Lake United Church, and keeping in touch with many friends and relations. She especially loved the outdoors and grew a beautiful huge garden up until her mid 80's, always eager to share its bounty with family and friends. Being blessed with good health and fierce independence, she resided on the farm she loved for 90 years and moved to the Lucky Lake Health Centre in 2008. Even when illness struck this past year, she always remained brave, cheerful and uncomplaining. Babe was a sweetheart--a strong, lively, outgoing and generous woman who loved life and laughter; she will be dearly missed and remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Lucky Lake Health Centre who provided such wonderful care and kindness this past year. Funeral Services will be held at Lucky Lake United Church on Wednesday, January 14th, at 1:30 p.m.; private interment will be held at a later date. Outlook Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and any emailed condolences may be sent to them at ofc87@sasktel.net. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lucky Lake Health Centre Foundation, Lucky Lake SK, S0L 1ZO, or the Alzheimers Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1.
