ALFRED ; Alice M. Woodbury, 93, a longtime resident of Alfred, passed peacefully in the morning on March 3, 2008, at the Varney Crossing Nursing Home in North Berwick. She was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1914, a daughter of Edward and Melvina Jarvis. She was raised in Alfred, graduating from Alfred High School. It was during her high school years that Alice was employed at the Alfred Mill.Alice studied nursing at the Maine General Hospital during the 1920s and later worked in the lab for the Goodall Textile Mills from 1945 until 1947.She married Earl A. Woodbury in 1935 and they shared 43 years together before his death on May 12, 1979.Mrs. Woodbury was an active member of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter in Manchester, N.H. and recently received her 50-year plaque.Alice was not your typical grandmother; she was more inclined to work outside her home, with such projects as mowing the lawn, painting the roof of the house or changing the oil in the family car and snow blowing the driveway. With her generous spirit, she enjoyed making pastries or meals to share with friends in the neighborhood. Her baked beans were a special treat. On many occasions, Alice would make sure there were enough goodies, and you could be sure your favorite pastry or cookie would be among the treats.Alice was very involved with the genealogy of the "Woodbury" family. She loved watching the Boston Celtics and followed them closely. Before she suffered a stroke, she was able to keep up a conversation with anyone when it came to basketball.Mrs. Woodbury was an avid gardener and passed her knowledge on to her granddaughter, Laurie. She was very involved in Laurie's childhood and memories were made from trips to the beach, feeding the birds or just being together for the day. When she became a great-grandmother of twins, it was instinct that she came to adore and cherish both Michael and Melissa.Family survivors include her son, Wayne R. Woodbury, and his wife, Joan, of Shapleigh; her granddaughter, Laurie Pelkey, and her husband, Max, of Berwick; her twin great-grandchildren, Michael Pelkey, of Portland, and Melissa Bryant, of Gorham; and a sister, Katherine, of Massachusetts. She was predeceased by three siblings, Ora, Irene and Blanche.Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home at 47 Oak Street in Alfred, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held later in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred. To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit www.autumngreenfuneralhome.com.Memorial donations may be made to the David's Fund, York County Federal Credit Union, 1516 Main Street, Sanford, Maine 04073.
