AUGUSTA, Ga. - Alice Evelyn Johns Davis, widow of Sam Thomas Davis, Jr., passed away peacefully in her daughter's home on November 2, 2006. It was on April 5, 1925, in Ooltewah, Tenn., that Alice was welcomed into the world by her parents, Hattie Mae Thomas Johns and Robert Jackson Johns. The family moved to Gore, Ga. in 1934 where Alice lived until graduation in 1941. Such an avid reader, Alice was first offered any new books that arrived at the school library. Alice moved to Chattanooga to work in the offices of the Chattanooga Times, later the Chattanooga Free Press, and volunteer with the Red Cross at Erlanger Hospital. On April 4, 1944 she married the love of her life, Sam T. Davis of Chattanooga while he was home on leave from the Coast Guard. She followed Sam to San Pedro, Calif. and returned to Chattanooga when he was shipped out to the Philippines. After the war, she worked at the University of Georgia as she helped Sam complete pharmacy school. Alice stayed home with her two children until they entered school. She became a "permanent" substitute teacher at Wheeless Road Elementary School, then served as the purchasing agent at Inglett & Company, Incorporated, retiring in 1989. The PTA, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, South Augusta Woman's Club, the Pharmaceutical Auxiliary, the Unitarian Fellowship, Butler Band Boosters Club, and Richmond Reelers Square Dance Club all benefited from Alice's hard work and enthusiasm. She was a chaperone or chauffeur for every field trip and school outing. Her sewing skills costumed many a square dancer and her beautiful quilts kept her family warm. She enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing, cheering for the Atlanta Braves, nightly Scrabble games with her daughter, and delighting in and doting on her only grandson, John. Her pecan pies were legendary and prized. She had a beautiful smile and a joyous laugh. Alice's daughter, Patricia Davis Hughes, husband, Peter, and their son, John, helped soften the loss of husband, Sam T. Davis, Jr. and only son, Sam T. Davis, III. With the help of Dorothy Wright and St. Joseph Hospice, her family was able to enjoy caring for her in their home. There was time to share the countless stories that made up her remarkable life and to remember the good times. Among those happy to have been part of Alice's life are, daughter-in-law, Cheryl M. Davis of Washington, D.C. and Cassandra K. Hughes of Marblehead, Mass. A memorial service and reception will be held at the Unitarian Church of Augusta on Walton Way, Sunday, November 19, 2006 from 3 to 5 p.m. Alice graciously donated her body to the Medical College of Georgia and will be buried alongside Sam at a later date.
