Alfred Smith Marotta, 82, a longtime resident of Ashland, MA and resident of Leominster since 2008, died Monday, April 28, in Sunrise Assisted Living, after an illness. He leaves two nephews, Jack Haugh, and his wife Karon of Greenville, SC and Edward Marotta of Worcester and two neices, Deborah Carter, and her husband, Leo of Lunenburg and Christine Hormell of Austin, TX; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Louis A. Marotta Jr. in 2003 and a sister, Mary Haugh in 2013. Mr. Marotta grew up in Lexington, MA and as an adolescent attended the Beverly School for the Deaf and was a 1950 graduate of Lexington High School. He later continued studies at Chauncey Hall Prep School in Lexington, received a Master of Science Degree from Tufts University in 1956 and a Masters Degree in Physics from Boston University in 1963. Alfred worked at the Army Materials Research Division in Watertown for many years and was a respected scientist in the field of physics and material research science. He worked on early development teams to add design enhancements to TTY communications, Deafnet bulletin boards and email communication networks. He used sign language at the first AT&T video transmission from Boston to Washington, DC. He also enjoyed performing and producing mime skits and performed in local theatre for the deaf for several years. His favorite role was playing Charlie Chaplin. He played a minor movie role in the 1952 movie Walk East on Beacon as a lip reading interpreter and produced, directed and played a character role in the movie Golden Legacy. He was actively involved in the Deaf Community Center in Framingham, as well as teaching at the Learning Center for the Deaf, also in Framingham. He was born in Cambridge, MA, on February 5, 1932, a son of the late Louis A., and Jennie (Racca) Marotta. A Graveside Service at Westview Cemetery in Lexington, MA will be held at a later date and time to be announced. There are no calling hours. The Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, MA is assisting the family with Funeral arrangements.
