PATTERSON, AVERY GERALD - age 78, born December 6, 1935 in Coker Creek, TN, passed away at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City, TN on March 15, 2014. He enlisted and served active duty in the Navy during the Korean War for three years and then served in the naval reserves for another 9 years. He looked at life with optimism and was always ready for an adventure. He loved to travel, and he enjoyed trying new things. He enjoyed a hearty meal and laughter wherever he went. He felt that life as meant to be lived and experienced. He loved nature, beautiful scenery and orchids. He loved to plant fruit trees and harvest from them. Having a real talent for gardening, he considered tending one to be a privilege. During his career he worked for TVA, L&N Railway, First Investors and Southern Railway. For the last seventeen years, he enjoyed retirement while residing at the David and Julia White Artist Colony in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Maudie (Shaw) Patterson; sister, Media Patterson and two brothers, James Patterson and Ray Patterson. He is survived by his brother, Harold Patterson and Harold's wife, Maxine. He is also survived by Louise Patterson (wife of Ray). Also surviving are Jean Patterson (mother) and Vivian Neill (grandmother) of his two sons, Dennis Patterson with his wife, Dawn and Nelson Patterson with his wife, Wendy; five grandchildren of which he was very proud, include Heather (Patterson) Hensley with husband, Chris Hensley, Drake Patterson with wife, Elizabeth, Amy Patterson, Kirk Patterson with wife, Shelby and Blair (Patterson) Bright with husband, Danny Bright; three great grandchildren, Patrick, Ellse and Micah Grace. He had many friends in Costa Rica including Ann James and Francisco Sanchez who manages the artist colony. The artist colony in Costa Rica will be his final resting place and where a memorial garden is to be located in his name. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Avery G. Patterson Memorial Garden Fund at 1649 Dutch Valley Road, Clinton, TN 37716. A local memorial service will be held Saturday March 22, 2014 at Faith Promise Church located at 10740 Faith Promise Lane just off of Pellissippi Parkway, Knoxville, TN 37931. Receiving of friends will begin at 1:30 p.m. and a service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Remembrances would be greatly appreciated. Please send to npatterson218781@comcast.net.
