Mrs. Arlene Michael Rogers, age 95, was born on March 4, 1915 in Hawthorne, FL to the late James & Rena Watson Michael, she passed away peacefully on Dec. 9, 2010 at Halifax Hospital. After moving to Daytona Beach in 1919 with her parents, she resided at 707 Loomis Ave. and attended Campbell Street School. On November 21, 1921, not quite 5 years old, she marched with her family to the first service at the New Mount Bethel Baptist Church, in 1931, the late Rev. A.B. Coleman baptized Arlene. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, tribe leader, charter choir member, and a Deaconess and Senior Mission Board member until her health failed. She received her BS degree from Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, and her MA degree from Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, FL. She started her teaching career in Fort Pierce, FL and taught in the Volusia County School District for 35 years, having taught at Bonner Elementary School and Hurst Elementary School. She was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc., Beta Iota Chapter, Bethune Cookman Alumni Association, and the Heroin's of Jericho Martha Court #16. She was married to the late Deacon Rozell Rogers, who brought two children to this union. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Rena Michael, siblings, Nola Michael, David Michael, George Michael, Denard Michael, Sr., Evelyn Michael Wright, Fannie Michael Walden, Robert Michael, Camellus Michael Stafford, and Gloria Michael Cowart. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at Mount Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, 700 S. Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL. Rev. Dr. Clanton C.W. Dawson, Jr., Pastor Officiating. Visitation will be held at the R.J. Gainous Funeral Home, 804 Mary McCleod Bethune Blvd. from Thurs., Dec. 16, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Evelyn C. Stafford and Rev. Ronald (Sheila) Stafford, St. Augustine, FL, Althea Michael, Hagerstown, MD, Joseph Walden, Daytona Beach, FL, Denard (Anne) Michael, Jr., Middletown, NY, James Michael, Elliott Michael Bennett, and Robert (Betty) Michael, Daytona Beach, FL; step-children, Julia Hayes and Walter (Ida) Sims, Daytona Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson, New York, NY; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a host of grand and great grand nieces and nephews and family members. Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 262 W. King St., St. Augustine, FL, Arnett C. Chase, Director in charge of arrangements assisted by the R.J. Gainous Funeral Home, Alexander Wynn, III Funeral Director.
