DeWitt, NY - William "Barney" Smith, 83, of 121 Fiordon Rd., DeWitt, NY, died Thursday, October 24, 2002 at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, NY. Friends may call at the Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 E. Genesee St., Syracuse, NY on Monday (Oct. 29, 2002) from 4-7PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday (Oct. 30) at 10:30 AM at St. David's Episcopal Church, Jamar Dr., DeWitt, NY with committal services at 2:30 PM at Maple Grove Cemetery, Waterloo, NY. If desired, contributions may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Jamar Dr., DeWitt, NY 13214 or to the Town of DeWitt Recreation Department, Butternut Dr., DeWitt, NY 13214. Mr. Smith was born in Bath, NY on January 22, 1919 the son of the late Lorenzo & Mae Barnard Smith. He has resided in DeWitt, NY since 1954 previously residing in Waterloo. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired sales manager from the New York Telephone Co., Syracuse & former owner of Jolly Roger Liquor Store, DeWitt, NY. He was a founding member of the St. David's Episcopal Church, DeWitt, NY & had served as land & building chairman. He served on the Town of DeWitt Planning Board for over 37 years & was active in the Town of DeWitt Recreation Department. He was an avid skier at Snow Ridge in Turin, NY & served as state chairman for the New York State Ski Racing Association. He also was an avid lightning sailor & was sailing instructor for the Red Cross & the Red Jacket Yacht Club of Seneca Falls of which he was a member. He is survived by his wife, Ann Eggleston Smith, DeWitt, NY; 1 daughter Garland (Roy) Blanch, San Jose, California; 1 son Goeffry (Brooke) Smith , New London, New Hampshire; 4 grandchildren Todd Livingston & Kellie Smith, Steven & Edith Ann Blanch; Several nieces & nephews. He was pre-deceased by 3 sisters.
