MCGILP -John G. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father while residing at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Joan; son, Ian and his wife, Anne (Vollett); a grandson, Lang and his wife, Michelle (Isbister), and great granddaughters, Maura and Eifa, all of Saskatoon; a granddaughter, Lesley and her husband, Chris (Regier), and great granddaughter, Roxanne Regier, in Calgary; a sister, Catherine Stewart and her family in Glasgow, Scotland; and a sister, Agnes McGilp in Wiltshire, England; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was pre-deceased by his parents and five brothers. John was born April 29, 1922 in Glasgow, County of Lanark, Scotland. He joined the Regular Army at age 19 and served in the Royal Armoured Corps, 12th Royal Tank Regiment for 4 1/2 years in Africa, Sicily, and Italy as a Tank Commander. On leaving the Colours as a result of his diligence and loyalty he was Commissioned in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and served with the Army Air Corps (Glider Pilot), and the Parachute Regiment, until December 1946. Medals awarded for service included the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star and First Army Clasp, the 1939-1945 Defence Medal, and in 1977 the Canadian Silver Jubilee Medal. After training at Lancaster College in Lancashire, he taught school in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, and later in Southern Alberta, after moving his family to Canada in August 1953. He was a member of Chinook Lodge AF&AM, Cowley, Alberta. He served in the Milita for seven years and joined the Federal Civil Service in 1958, serving in Yellowknife and Fort Smith, NWT, Saskatoon, Toronto, and Ottawa as a senior public servant. He retired in 1979. He was an avid reader, history being his specialty, after teaching it for many years. He loved life and lived it well. He lived and died a Scot. Grateful thanks for the care provided by his caregivers, nurses, and support staff at Sherbrooke Community Center where he spent his declining years until his passing. In lieu of flowers, remember him in your prayers tonight. He had 62 years of marriage and loved every minute of it. "The moving finger writes, and, having writ, moves on " Omar Khayyam.
