Fay, John "Jack" MECHANICVILLE John "Jack" Fay, 91, died peacefully on Monday March 11, 2013 surrounded by his family at his daughter's home in Delmar. Born in Amster dam on July 10, 1921, raised in Saratoga Springs, and a life long resident of Mechanicville, Jack was the son of the late Loretta and Bernard Fay. His brother Bernard Fay and sister Eileen Orbacz also predeceased him. Jack was a graduate of St. Peter's Academy in Saratoga Springs and Albany Business College. He worked at the General Electric Corporation in Schenectady prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served as a pharmacist's mate, first class with a Seabee unit that supported the Second Marine Division in the Pacific and in the post-war occupation of Japan in Nagasaki. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December 1945. He opened the Albany Veterans Hospital in 1951 bringing its first patients from Saratoga Springs and retired as an administrator in 1980. It is there that he met the love of his life, the late Jane Carelli Fay who worked there as a nurse. Jack enjoyed horse racing, and after he retired from the VA he worked at the Saratoga Harness Track. He was an avid downhill skier and tennis player. He was known as a Saratoga Springs historian and often reminisced and told stories of his experiences growing up there. He was an active communicant of St. Paul's parish in Mechanicville. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Jane Carelli Fay, and his three sisters-in-law, Rose Willard of Bennington, Vt., Mary Alonzo of Mechanicville, and Dorothy Carelli of Richmond, Va.; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Orbacz. Survivors include his devoted daughter, Tracy Fay Raleigh and son-in-law, Sean Raleigh and his loving son, David Fay and daughter-in-law, Kerry and five grandchildren, Thomas, Connor and Liam Raleigh of Delmar and Lena and Carly Fay of Saratoga; four brothers-in-law, Robert Willard of Bennington, Dominic Carelli (Mary) and John Alonzo of Mechanicville, and Frank Carelli of Richmond and a sister-in-law, Lois Fay of Schenectady; as well as his life-long friends, Paul and MaryLou McDonald of Mechanicville and their five children and families. For those who knew Jack, he is remembered for his kindness, generosity and gentle smile, and for his love of life, people and conversation. A funeral Mass will be held at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St, Mechanicville on Saturday, March 16 at 9 a.m. Interment with military honors in St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the DeVito-Salvatore Funeral Home Inc., 39 South Main St., Mechanicville on Friday, March 15 from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Peter's /Saratoga Central Catholic High School for a scholarship fund in memory of Jack Fay. www.devito-salvadorefh.com to leave condolences and for directions.
