GILBERT _ Frances Joyce R.N. (retired) December 27, 1921 - February 05, 2007 Predeceased by her parents, George and Mabel Furness, brother Thomas Buddy and Alma (Elmer) Abrams. She is survived by her husband Ted of 52 years, sons Kenneth (Debbie) and Thomas, grandchildren Tim and Sara, and nieces and nephews. Joyce has been a resident of New Westminster all her life, having been born and raised here. It is also where she met Ted, while singing in the choir of St. Paul's Church in the early 1950's, who she later married and together raised their two sons. It was fitting then that she was a member of the Native Daughters. She was also a member of the Nurses Alumni and was an active member in several local churches, including St. Paul's Reformed Episcopal Church, Shiloh United Church and First Presbyterian Church where she particularly enjoyed her role in the choir. Her singing abilities took her all over the lower mainland, singing at weddings, funerals and special occasions with her sister. Joyce graduated from Duke of Connaught High School and went on to train at the Royal Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1944 B. After a short time working locally she went on to train at the Margaret Hague Hospital in New Jersey as an obstetrics nurse. At the end of her training there, she returned to Royal Columbian Hospital where she took on the role as head of the maternity ward. In all, her nursing career spanned an impressive 40 years. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, 335 7th Street, New Westminster.
