DOUGLASS, BARBARA LOUISE (NEE GILMAN) - Barbara Louise Douglass (nee Gilman) passed away Saturday morning January 5, 2008 at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital after a sudden illness, surrounded by her beloved family. She was the daughter of John William Frederick Gilman and Lois Josephine Marshall and was born in Marysville in 1931. She is survived by her daughter, Katheryn Douglass (Donald Mazerolle); grandson, Laurie Douglass Mazerolle; son Christopher Douglass; and sister, Elmira Thorpe; sisters-in-law, Marian (Watters) Hagerman, Barbara Suter; and brother-in-law, Brian Douglass; and several nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Laurence Douglass; son Gordon Douglass; and her parents. Barbara was a self-described domestic engineer, and an extraordinary caregiver to those she knew and loved. She and her husband of 56 years, Laurie, spent their time divided between their home in Fredericton and their summer residence in Bouctouche, New Brunswick where they delighted in the company of friends and family. Barbara and Laurie were instrumental along with Bouctouche community members in the restoration and designation of St Lawrence Anglican Church as a NB historic property. She was an avid curler and was a member of the Capital Winter Club for 47 years achieving many championships and more importantly enjoyed playing the game with her fellow friends and curlers. She took up golf in her retirement and enjoyed golfing with friends and family and was a long-time member of Bouctouche Golf Club. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed playing bridge, her special passion was bird watching and she was a keen lover of nature and animals, a passion that she shared with her daughter and grandson. Barb was a member of the Fredericton Nature Club. A memorial service will take place at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road Wednesday, January 9, at 1:00 PM. Internment will follow in the spring. There will be a reception following the service at the Capital Winter Club at 232 Rookwood Avenue.
