Obituary of William Smith


William Noland "Bill" Smith, 88, of 204 McDade Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001. Born in Central, he was a son of the late Preston W. and Lula Lee Smith. He retired from The Greenville News in 1977 after 29 years. He was also associated with Smith Printing Co. and The Greer Citizen. He served in the U.S. Navy at Newport, R.I. from 1943 to 1945. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greer and the Baracca Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Bailey Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Hazel Burgin Smith of the home; a son, William Noland Smith Jr. of Newburgh, Ind.; a daughter, Mary Lee Bolen of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Louise Bertram of Altoona, Pa.; five granddaughters, Jennifer Bolen of Myrtle Beach, Elizabeth Bolen of Raleigh, N.C., Emily Smith of Richmond, Va., Jennifer Sigler of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Angela Smith of Newburgh, Ind; a great-grandson, Evan Andrew Sigler of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. today at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by Dr. Wilson Nelson and the Rev. Tony Hemphill. Burial will be in Wood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3 to 4 p.m. today at The Wood Mortuary. The family will be at the home. Memorials may be made to the Baracca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 531, Greer, SC 29652.
