WALLINGFORD - Mr. William J. Carew, 86, of 65 Masonic Ave., died Thursday Aug. 2, 2007 at the Masonic Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Helen E. (Mitchell) Carew who died in 2005 after 59 years of marriage. Mr. Carew was born in Waterbury, Nov. 26, 1920, a son of the late Pierce and Elizabeth (Jamison) Carew. Mr. Carew was educated in the local school system, and graduated from Crosby High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, serving as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic with the 332nd Troop Carrier Squadron. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. He was a lifelong member of the Mill Plain Union Church, where he was a member of the Men's Club, had been Superintendent of the Sunday School, Sung in the Choir and was a member of the Church's Golf League. He retired in 1980 from Century Brass where he had worked for over 42 years and was a resident of West Harwich, Mass for over 20 years, returning to Connecticut and Wallingford in 2004. He was a 50-year member of Harmony Lodge #42 A.F. & A.M. of Waterbury; the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Waterbury; the Lafayette Consistory, Valley of Bridgeport; Sphinx Shriners of Newington; The Naugatuck Shrine Club, and the Cape Cod Shrine Club. He was also a former member of the Cranberry Valley Golf Club on Cape Cod. He leaves two daughters, Sheryn M. Carew of Southborough, Mass. and Susan C. McCarthy of O'Fallon, Ill.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Mill Plain Union Church, 242 Southmayd Rd., Waterbury. Entombment will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery Columbarium at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 70 Central Ave. is in charge of arrangements.
