Walter D. McKenna, 82, of Centerville, died after a brief illness at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. Walter was born in Norwood to the late Walter Sharpe McKenna and Agnes (Wallace) McKenna. He was the beloved husband of Edna (Malone) McKenna. He was a 1948 graduate of Norwood High School, and served in the U.S. Navy as Pharmacist's Mate from 1948-1952. Following his discharge, he attended the New England College of Pharmacy in Boston, where he served as President of his class each year. In 1956 he married Edna Malone and in 1959 moved to Centerville, where they raised their family. Walter and his business partner/co-Pharmacist Earl Batson co-owned the Osterville Drug Store for 35 years, and he was a proud and active member of the Osterville business community. Walter was a member of South Congregational Church for more than 50 years. During that time he served as a Trustee, Deacon, Chairman of the Thrifty Niche and on numerous committees. Walter served as Secretary of the Osterville Veterans Club for many years, and was an active Lifetime Member of the Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club. He was one of the original members of the Highland Light Scottish Pipe Band and served as both Drum Sergeant and Band Manager. During his 20 years in the band he marched in countless parades and competitions across the State and in New England. Walter is also survived by his three daughters and their families; Nanci and her husband John Nicholson and their daughter Kelli of Stafford Virginia; Joanne McKenna and her husband, Steve Harnish and their sons Samuel and Andrew of Boston; and Laurie McKenna and her partner Jerem Krause of McNeil, Arizona. Walter was predeceased by his infant son Andrew Douglas McKenna, and his sisters, Mary Barnes and Lois Fitzgerald. A celebration of Walter's life will be held in the South Congregational Church, 565 Main Street, Centerville, MA 02632 on Friday, November 9th at 2:00pm.
