Virginia M. Johnson, 91 DELAND, Fla. -- Virginia M. Johnson, 91, went to meet her Lord on Sept. 22, 2013. She was born in Portland, on Jan. 19, 1922, the daughter of John and Inga Johnson. She graduated from Deering High School in 1939 and resided in Portland for 85 years before moving to DeLand, Fla. in 2007. Virginia was a lifelong member of First Evangelical (formerly Payson Park) Free Church of Maine, serving as its Treasurer for 40 years and in numerous other executive capacities. She was also on the Board of the EFCA New England District, on the Mission Board of the Evangelical Free Church, and Director and Treasurer of the State Board of the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Maine. Virginia's commitment to child evangelism was strong, and she served for many years as a First Aid and Water Safety instructor at Camp Good News in Livermore Falls. She was also an active member of the Cumberland County Republican Committee. Virginia was very proud to reach her goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant in February 1974. She was among the very first women to achieve that distinction in the state of Maine. She ran her own accounting practice in Portland for many years. Ginnie will always be remembered for her great gift of hospitality, regularly opening her lovely home to friend and stranger alike. All were welcome. One might come as a stranger, but would always leave as a friend. She also had the gift of music, as a clarinetist, and singer - lending her talents to many a musical group, usually giving praise to her Lord and Savior. She always noted that her life was blessed by her many cousins who were so numerous and musical that when gathered, they formed a cousins' band, a source of great joy to Ginnie and all. Virginia enjoyed immensely the opportunity to be close to her dearest friend, Edna Welbourn, at the Christian Missionary Alliance Community in DeLand, Fla. where she joined Edna in her efforts on behalf of GLEAM, a loving mission to community residents, especially those with Alzheimer's disease. Her family is very grateful to the members of the CMA community for their loving care. Virginia was predeceased by her brother Evan. She is survived by her nieces Karen (Johnson) Sprout of Hartford, Conn. and Kathryn Johnson of Washington, DC.; and her sister in law, June Johnson. A celebration of Virginia's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at First Evangelical Free Church of Maine, at 355 Bridgton Rd., Westbrook. The family will greet friends at the church reception following the service. Care for Virginia and her family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.
